The Kaohsiung Rotary Club partners with educational institutions to promote environmental education, helping to refurbish old computers to donate to students in rural Taiwan. Some of the computers have even been sent overseas to help establish computer labs in Africa. The initiative has earned high praise from the Rotary Foundation, which recently sent its trustee chair to Shoushan Junior High School to see the initiative in action. She highly commended Taiwan’s commitment to nurturing charitable values with fostering a global perspective in students.

Students from National Sun Yat-sen University demonstrate how to assemble a computer, passing along their technical know-how to show high schoolers how to repurposethis old hardware for a new life in underserved schools.

Shih Fu-chuan
Kaohsiung Rotary Club president
By letting the students refurbish the computers themselves and sending them to remote areas for young kids to use at home, they understand that their hard work can directly help those in need.

Jack Hsu
NSYSU Department of Information Management chair
We create educational materials for these elementary and junior-high students to learn about reducing electronic waste. Along with the Rotary Club and Shoushan Junior High, we’ve donated 200 computers to Malawi.

The university, Kaohsiung Rotary Club, and Shoushan Junior High all work together to teach environmental concepts, helping reduce electronic waste while promoting up-cycling. After the students refurbish an old computer, it’s donated to students in remote areas of Taiwan. Some have even been sent to Malawi to help four local high schools set up computer labs. The initiative has earned praise from the Rotary Foundation.

Jennifer Jones
Rotary Foundation trustee chair
We’ve had a wonderful opportunity to be able to experience what the students are learning about inside of the high school today, where they’re reducing e-waste and recycling and taking computers, refurbishing them, being able to put them into rural communities, where students can have opportunity, and also into developing countries. It is absolutely, truly remarkable to see what the students are able to accomplish and help their being better citizens of the world.

Even while millions of children worldwide lack the digital tools required to learn, millions more electronic devices are thrown away every year. Through Taiwan’s generosity and the power of education, local students in Africa are empowered to transform their futures.
